SUSTAINABILITY

Airconditioning

Air conditioning results in around 20% of the electricity used in buildings today – and amounts to 10% of electricity consumption worldwide. As such, we kindly ask for Villa Somervail guests to be mindful of air conditioning usage, switching it off if windows and doors are open and ideally keeping the temperature set to between 21 and 23 degrees. The units work quickly, so there is little need for the air conditioning to be on all day.

Solar

In the coming year, Villa Somervail will be fitted with solar panels to harvest the ample solar rays of Skiathos. For now, we kindly ask guests to ensure lights are switched off when not in the room and to check the refrigerator door is closed.

Water & Fire

As we all know, water is a precious resource. At Villa Somervail, we are blessed to be able to draw fresh water straight from Mount Pelion’s aquifer. This water is stored in the villa’s own well. Whilst the supply is plentiful, we kindly ask for guests to be mindful of their usage, turning taps off as much as possible. Just by turning the tap off whilst you brush your teeth, you can save the world up to 8 gallons of water a day. Along this vein, our expectation is for bed linen and towels to be washed weekly. Our garden is luscious and we use a rainwater harvesting system to water it.

Due to the hot and dry weather, Greece is a country with risk of forest fires.  We kindly ask our guests who smoke, to take extreme care with disposal of cigarettes. Ash trays are provided. Discarded litter, in particular glass bottles, pose a fire risk when the sun’s rays are magnified through it. We kindly ask all guests to dispose of all litter using the bins provided.
